Top 5 Highest Scoring Super Bowls

Number 3:  Super Bowl XXXVII

This game featured the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders.  Total points scored in the game were 69 with a final score of 48-21 and the Buccaneers win.  Raiders' quarterback Rich Gannon threw a Super Bowl record five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns.  It has been called the "Pirate Bowl" since both teams have pirate-related logos. It was the first time in Super Bowl history that the league's Number 1 ranked offense (Raiders) was pitted against the league's number 1 ranked defense (Buccaneers). To date, this is the most recent Super Bowl to have been played in the month of January.

Number 2:  Super Bowl XXVII

This game featured the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills.  Total points scored in the game were 69 with a final score of 52-17 and the Cowboys win.  The Bills became the first team to lose three consecutive Super Bowls, and just the second team to play in three straight (the Miami Dolphins played in Super Bowls VI-VIII, winning VII and VIII).  The Bills' Super Bowl record nine turnovers—four interceptions and five lost fumbles—led to their third consecutive Super Bowl loss.  Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 28 yards.

Number 1:  Super Bowl XXIX

This game featured the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers.  Total points scored in the game were 75 with a final score of 49-26 and the 49ers win.  The combined aggregate score of 75 and the ten total touchdowns both remain Super Bowl records. This is the first time that both teams scored in all four quarters of a Super Bowl.  49ers quarterback Steve Young threw a record 6 touchdown passes en route to the Super Bowl MVP award. (His four TDs in a half tied Doug Williams from the Washington Redskins). He also completed 24 out of 36 passes for 325 yards, and was the top rusher of the game with 49 rushing yards (the first time both top passer and rusher were the same person).

Top 5 Highest Scoring Super Bowls

Since Super Bowl XLIV features two of the top quarterbacks (Drew Brees and Payton Manning) in the game today and two offenses that can generate a lot of points if push comes to shove, I thought it would be appropriate to list the Top 5 Highest Scoring Super Bowl Games in NFL History.

Number 5:   Super Bowl XXIV

This game featured the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos.  Total points scored in the game were 65 with the final score of 55-10 and the 49ers win.  It remains the most lopsided game in Super Bowl history to date. The 49ers' 55 points were the most ever scored by one team, and their 45-point margin of victory was the largest ever.  Joe Montana was named the Super Bowl MVP, his third award in his fourth Super Bowl victory. He completed 22 of 29 passes for a total of 297 yards and a Super Bowl record 5 touchdowns, while also rushing for 15 yards.

Number 4:  Super Bowl XIII

This game featured the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys.  Total points scored in the game were 66 with the final score of 35-31 and the Steelers win.  Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw was named Super Bowl MVP. Despite throwing one interception, losing two fumbles, and single handedly keeping the Cowboys in the game in the first half, Bradshaw completed 17 out of 30 passes for 318 yards and 4 touchdowns. His 318 passing yards and 4 passing touchdowns broke Super Bowl records.  The Cowboys were the first team, and to date the only team, to score 30 points or more and still lose the Super Bowl.

What the NBA Should Learn From the NHL

I have been watching both the NBA and NHL playoffs this year and the NHL playoffs have been much more exciting than usual , while the NBA playoffs have been much more boring than usual. Not even my compulsion for Sports Betting can save my enthusiasm for the NBA playoffs. I guess if a Kobe-Lebron NBA finals were to happen, I would return to my NBA betting ways.

The highlight for this NHL playoff season so far has to be RW Scott Walker of the Carolina Hurricanes. First he KOs Bruins D-man Aaron Ward in Game 5 of their western-conference semifinals.  Personally  I don't think this was a sucker punch. Ward had his arms at his sides while Walker grabbed his sweater and cocked his right fist.

Then for 2 games every red-blooded Bruins fan was wanting retribution and bloodshed. I dont blame them. But the hockey gods had something else in mind.

Game over. Series Over. Who cares what any "American" sports commentator says about fighting in hockey, you have to give props to a game where players grow ugly beards, throw their bodies around without hesitation and if a line is crossed they drop their gloves to protect their own. Every NHL player knows its all business come playoff time, that is why every NHL playoff series ends in a handshake and a "job well done" pat on the back.

Now lets turn to the NBA playoffs:

  • Derek Fisher body checks Luis Scola = Flagerent 2 + ejection + 1 game suspension for Fisher
  • Rafer Alston slaps Eddie House upside his head = technical foul + 1 game suspension for Alson
  • Kobe Bryant elbows Ron Artest = a private call from Stu Jackson about his future in the NBA (currently just a conspiracy theory)

Now imagine if everyone involved in the above was able to play on without fallout from the referees or the league. Now that would be a series to watch.

Other suggestions for David Stern:

  • Add games played outdoors on the black top with a chain netting instead of the mesh.
  • If a player wants to be considered for the MVP award he must enter the slam dunk contest.
  • Every team must have 1 goon/enforcer type on the squad.
  • Add a penalty box. Instead of ejecting a player, lets give him a timeout.
